The College Coach Program

The College Coach program is designed to foster greater college graduation rates through family-designated coaches who will work with youth from 5th grade through their sophomore year of college. The participating students, identified by Toledo Public School administration in conjunction with the Toledo Federation of Teachers leadership, receive services including workshops for coaches, skill development for students, and college awareness trips.

The College Coach program is currently available to Sherman, Robinson, Pickett, Glenwood, and Grove Patterson Academy through strong community partnerships, including collaboration among Partners In Education, Lucas County Job and Family Services, Toledo Community Foundation, Toledo Public Schools, Toledo Federation of Teachers, and the Lucas County Commissioner’s office.

The College Coach program has support from many local colleges and universities, including University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Lourdes University, Owens Community College, and Mercy College.

It is the mission of CC to change the culture in Northwest Ohio where earning a college degree is an expectation of our young people. To that end, CC will provide a comprehensive program wherein designated coaches and students commit to ongoing communication of reviewing and discussing the student’s academic performance from 5th grade through sophomore year of college. By investing in CC resources that align with the Toledo Public School guidance-counselor curriculum, children at an early age will learn the importance of a college education.

The CC program has four fundamental goals:

  1. To assure students are academically, financially, and emotionally prepared for success in postsecondary education.
  2. To increase student and community understanding of the importance of higher education.
  3. To provide specific college-preparation contact points for students at crucial milestones in their academic career.
  4. To develop a collaborative community structure to support the students of Lucas County in their college aspirations.
