Tutoring & Mentoring

Partners In Education recruits, screens, places and facilitates training of volunteers who wish to serve as  tutors and/or mentors in the schools. New volunteers often have some questions about tutoring. We hope you'll find the answers below helpful!

What formal qualifications are there to be a volunteer tutor?

Every tutor must pass a background check coordinated by Partners In Education. There is no cost to the volunteer for the background check, which is valid for two years. Volunteer tutors are also asked to participate in training provided by the in-school coordinator, who will help you to understand school procedures for identification as a volunteer and confidentiality rules.

How often should I be willing to tutor?

By offering just one hour of your time even one time per week, you can make a big difference in a child's academic performance.

How long does each tutoring session last?

No longer than one hour, with segments including vocabulary, reading, review, and comprehension. Tutoring normally takes place during school hours or after school.

Is there a minimum "tour of duty" that I should commit to as a tutor?

Partners In Education suggests considering a one year commitment to tutoring.

I have not been a tutor before. What if I don't feel prepared to tutor?

The confidence of being a tutor will come naturally. All students appreciate your time, and are respect that you would care enough to volunteer time to them.

What if I run into difficulties tutoring a particular child?

Some students might not be a good match, but patience and perseverance will assist, if the child is totally not a good match, the in-school coordinator can be contacted or the Partners In Education office and we will provide any necessary help.

Who do I contact if an emergency prevents me from attending a scheduled tutoring session?

Always call the school, who can let the classroom teacher know as the student looks forward to the tutoring sessions.

How do I become assigned as a tutor for a particular student?

That is the job of the classroom teacher and making recommendations to the in-school coordinator for a tutor.

How can I help with recruitment of other volunteers from my company to tutor?

Share with them what a worthwhile experience it is, and encourage them to be a tutor also.
